Anwar Maghreb is a world music artist, singer, and songwriter based in Boston, MA (USA). Originally from Morocco, North Africa, he was known as "The Maghreb". Anwar began his musical career at the age of six as a chorister in a Sofi spiritual assembly, then progressing to classical and traditional Arabic, Maghrebian, and Andalusian Singing. By the early 1990's, he took a new road towards an innovative musical genre known as "Raï music" that became very popular. Anwar recorded his first album in 1998 at Younes Megri's (a legendary Moroccan artist) studio called "Soleil Du Maghreb" in Morocco's capital city, Rabat.
He moved to the United States in 2001 to study Music Technology in the state of Wyoming and joined a band called Gone South. Anwar then continued his musical career, traveling throughout many other states.
Anwar Maghreb has won and was nominated for several music awards in the USA, including the Boston Music Award, the Independent Music Award (as the lead singer of the band Atlas Soul in the World Music Category), and the Music for Peace Act. His songs HOME, MAHMOUMA, and GYPSY WIND have gained him much recognition. His goal is to unite his cultural musical background with the influences of Rock, Funk, Jazz, and Reggae.
